Melville Family Funds supports two more local charities

As you know, the PCC uses the money left by Jill Melville to support local charities and has recently started to support two on a regular basis.

The first is the Growing Space in Wincanton.  The Growing Space uses an innovative approach through horticulture to help a wide range of people in our area who are experiencing a range of challenges and problems. Nick Truman the manager said:-

“This gift is a real life saver for us and ensures we can continue not only to look after our existing clients but to expand and bring in others such as older people, who find gardening work in a social situation, is good for general health and mobility.

“Nick also said we welcome local volunteers, who enrich our services by helping people with learning disabilities, people going through a bad time, or living in social isolation. He invites members of the public who would like to come in to help for a few hours a week, to contact him at the garden or in The Balsam Centre. No special gardening knowledge is needed and indeed, it is surprising how many gardening tips you might pick up!    We are expert slug controllers!”

The second initiative is to become a Friend of The Balsam Centre.  The Centre continues with its work and is seeking funds to help to cover the costs of an experienced mental health worker who can help people with difficulties ranging from isolation to long term conditions and crisis. The PCC’s support will be very helpful in demonstrating local support for the Centre as a powerful argument when applying for grants.

The PCC continues to support the Wincanton Live at Home Scheme and the Friends of North Dorset Women’s Refuge from Jill’s legacy. All four charities are supported at the rates between £750 and £1250 per quarter and the support is promised for 5 years.
