The community website for Pen Selwood
The History Society is for everyone interested in the history of Pen Selwood. We foster and promote the study and appreciation of local history by sharing what we each know about the past.
The meetings will be held monthly between October and April usually on Wednesdays at 7:30pm in private homes. We may arrange some outdoor daytime visits.

I came across this today. Andrew Ewens of Penselwood was fined £10 in 1631 for not attending the Coronation of King Charles 1. How many of you would have been fined and What would the fine be today?!

Is anyone interested and available to respond?
“I've just joined your community and would like to contact someone in your History Society who may be able to help with a request and I was hoping you could recommend who to approach.
My friend is visit from Devon for a few days from 11th to 16th August and I live on the far side of Shaftesbury. We have both read the book Ferney, which is a fictional novel played out through historic events which take place around Pen Selwood. We are planning to visit the area while she is here to explore the village and some of the landmarks mentioned in the book, which you may have heard of.
Now to the point of my enquiry. We were wondering if there is anyone in the History Society who may be available to meet us and spare an hour or two to give us an informed tour of some of the local places of historic interest around the village at some point during those dates in August?
I would be grateful if you could suggest either someone I could approach, or if you don't share contact details, please do pass on my email or phone number (01722 780796) and ask them if they would be kind enough to contact me.
Thank you for your help and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello
I am making of study of Primitive Methodist chapels in Dorset and Somerset. I understand that the chapel in Pen Selwood, originally sited in Chapel Lane, was closed in the 1950's. Can anyone confirm that the building was totally demolished or was it modified for residential use ?It is difficult to see on Google Street View what structure is on the site now.Additionally if anyone has or knows the whereabouts of a photo of the original chapel I should be delighted to hear from them. I am not local but live in South Dorset. Many Thanks
Martin Reeves
I've added the presentation from last Wednesdays meeting as a page. You'll need to hit View All to see the list.
Feedback about the meeting has been very positive.
