The Sycamore Tree by the church

The tree has been identified as being diseased and Highways want either to fell it or reduce it to a monolith.

Unfortunately Highways did not consult with the Parish Council and the work was almost carried out.

The Parish Council are now working to see what other options might be available to save this significant and historical tree.

In the meantime signs have been put on the tree to make sure no work is carried out before the parish council have had time to work through other ideas and consult with the village.

Comment by Admin on October 11, 2019 at 15:25: According to Jock Baker and Michael Shiel in their book "Pen Selwood - a Village on the edge of the great Selwood Forest" - "There is a tradition, apparently taught in the village school, that John Wesley preached under the great sycamore tree near Pen's church. There is no direct evidence of this, but it is certainly not unlikely."
