"I dont think the truth is quite as simple as Mr Thomas makes out.I have plenty of 19th century documents referring to Pen Selwood.

The problem is that it is much easier to say Pencilwood than Pen Selwood.

When I first lived in the village in 1964 I was told that the name was correctly two words but that many people ran it together out of laziness.Olive Moldram who has lived in the parish for more than 80 years told me that the children were tested in school in the 1930s by the village policeman as to the correct pronunciation, and if they pronounced it Mr Thomas" way they were punished."

Peter FitzGerald, Pen Selwood
