[RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - HEADQUARTERS - 7545 - Foiling the phone scammer]

We are reminding people to be careful of phone scammers after several reports of bogus callers claiming to be police or security companies.

There have several incidents in North Somerset and South Gloucestershire over the last month where residents received a call on their landline from someone purporting to be from either the police or a security company.

An elderly couple in Clevedon, North Somerset, received a call from a man claiming to be from "The Crime Reduction Unit of the police". He was trying to persuade the couple to buy an alarm for £1.00 that would connect them to the local police and fire service. He also wanted to make an appointment to visit their home. They weren't sure about the man so they hung up and told their neighbour, who alerted police.

In a similar vein, an elderly lady in South Gloucestershire was made aware of a potential scam after a friend received a call. When she then got a phone call herself she was prepared.

She was called by a man who stated he was from a security company wanting to conduct a home survey.  She asked for the proposal to be put in writing and for a letter to be sent with some literature to her so she could speak to her son, at which point the man put the phone down.

PC Fin Simmons from Avon and Somerset Police said: "I encourage people to take care when they received unsolicited calls from people. The two ladies who received calls did exactly the right thing in trying to get the person to prove their identity. Reputable companies or genuine callers will be happy to prove who they are and provide identification.

"It's important to reiterate the more we talk about these scams, the more people are made aware of them the less likely they are to become victims. Please spread the word to your relatives, neighbours, colleagues and friends, especially those who are elderly or vulnerable.

"If you are unsure of anyone asking you for details, we would advise you to be overly cautious. There are some simple but effective measures people can take to minimise the risk of becoming a victim of these scams."

. If someone claims to be from a company check their details, look at their website and see if they have any testimonials.
. Call the company, but don't use a number the caller gives you. Look one up on the internet or in a phone directory.  Before you make the call, either use a different telephone or wait for a dialling tone to ensure the bogus callers are not still on the line.
. If the person claims to be from the local police, always ask for their collar number or staff I.D number. Every officer or staff member has one. You can then call 101 to check they are who they say they are.
. Don't release any personal information including any bank details that could be exploited unless you have confirmed the caller is genuine and reputable and you actually need what is being offered.
. The police and the banks will never ask you for banking details or PIN numbers on the phone.

If you have information about any crime, phone the police on 101 or you can call anonymously to the independent charity CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111.  For general information about Neighbourhood Watch nationally see the www.ourwatch.org.uk website.

[RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - HEADQUARTERS - Active Citizens Survey - Two days left!]

Dear all,

Thank you to the many among you who have completed Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens' 'Active Citizens Survey'! There are two days left to take part, so, if you haven't already, please consider giving up a few minutes of your time to help us shape the constabulary's service!

Below, I attach the PCC's original email.

Many thanks for your help,

Andreas Mueller
Senior Projects Officer
Public Service and Local Policing,
Strategic Service Improvement
Tel. 01275 814536

Dear resident,

In March 2013 I issued Avon and Somerset's first Police and Crime Plan which set out my commitment to reducing the impact of anti-social behavior and preventing and reducing burglary, particularly by working with local residents and communities.
Local 'Watch' schemes, such as Neighbourhood Watch and Community Speedwatch play an important role in contributing to this plan and, I am therefore very keen to hear your views about the scheme that you are involved in and the support you receive from the police.

I would therefore be grateful if you could take time to complete this survey, which should take no longer than 10 minutes.

To access the survey, please copy the following url into the address bar of your web browser:

http://www.consultation.avonandsomerset.police.uk/police/370326a9

The attached is a printable version of the survey. If you are aware of members of your scheme, or other co-ordinators, who do not have access to the internet, you could:

- print a copy of the survey for them OR
- telephone Sergeant Paul White on 01275 816547. He will be able to send paper copies of the survey.

The survey is confidential and will be used to inform the way that we work with schemes such as yours and empower communities to tackle the issues that most affect their area.

I would like to thank you in advance for your support and involvement in your community.  Your contribution is important to both myself and the Constabulary and you have my continued support.

Sue Mountstevens,
Avon & Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner

Crime Prevention Advice:

There has recently been a spate of walk-in opportunist thefts across the Policing District.

Can you please remind your members to make sure windows and doors are secure, even if you are outside in the garden or garage.
With the warm weather you may want to throw open your windows and doors, but remember it only takes a few seconds for a thief to enter your property and steal your possessions.

If you are leaving your property for any length of time, please consider using timer switches, make sure you cancel your deliveries such as milk and papers and ideally ask a neighbour to collect your post on a regular basis.

[RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - HEADQUARTERS - 7545 - Be prepared to deal with fraudsters!]

Dear all,

Last week the force had to deal with another example of a nationwide telephone scam which is preying on elderly and vulnerable people. A  foreign sounding male contacted a taxi company in Taunton and ordered a taxi to go to the address of a vulnerable individual and  take them to a post office or bank. They also requested the potential victim to ring them for further instructions, which would no doubt have caused them to part with a large amount of money. In this case, the fraud was narrowly prevented by the vigilance of the taxi driver, but we would like you all to be on the lookout for further offences. Please also consider those among your neighbours who may be more vulnerable than yourself. The force area has suffered a number of these 'courier fraud' offences, and in one case an unsuspecting victim lost £34,000!

Below is a link to an article showing how Avon & Somerset detectives are fighting this type of crime: https://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/newsroom/zephyr-act-to-stem-m...

Crimestoppers have launched a special website, www.crimestoppers-uk.org/gameoffraud, with information and advice on how to avoid falling prey to a variety of types of fraud. Take their online quiz and find out if you may be vulnerable!

Dear all,

Avon and Somerset Constabulary is opening its doors to Police Headquarters in Portishead to celebrate its 40th Anniversary.

A fancy dress competition, open to all under 12s attending, will also be judged by Phillip Schofield, with great prizes to be won.

The event forms part of the Avon and Somerset Constabulary's 40th Anniversary celebrations. On 1st April 1974, Bristol Constabulary, Bath and Somerset Constabulary and the Staple Hill division of Gloucestershire Constabulary merged to form Avon and Somerset Constabulary as we know it today.

The HQ site at Portishead was opened by Princess Anne in 1992 and the new headquarters were officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen on 2nd June 1995.

How to book tickets:
. The free tickets will be available to order from Wednesday 28th May at 8:30am.
. Book online at http://ascopenday.eventbrite.com/?aff=ringmaster

This message is sent to schemes across Somerset at the request of our CID officers.

There has been a spate of incidents where victims have been contacted by telephone by unknown persons purporting to be police officers.  The victims are given various stories but essentially they are being asked to either provide bank details, or to obtain cash from their bank.  In particular this cash is then being collected by taxi drivers and ferried to London.

One incident that occurred recently in Somerset came to light because the taxi driver was suspicous about the package he was asked to collect and take to London.  He opened the package to find several thousand pounds in cash and immediately called the police.

Police wish to emphasise that they would never contact people by telephone and ask for their bank details, or for them to take cash from their bank.  Likewise organisations such as banks, utilities etc would never ask for such information.

Please remind members that they should never give any personal details to strangers over the phone, by Email/internet or at the door.  It is important that vulnerable members of our communities are reminded of this.

If you have any suspicions surrounding matters of his type of incident please ensure that you contact the police straight away on the 101 number, or if you think it is an emergency situation, call 999.

[RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - SOMERSET WEST - G0285 19032014]

Message to all Schemes across Somerset.

This message is sent at the request of the police at a high priority.

Over the past couple of days there have been several reports of fraud occurring, predominantly in the North Somerset area but it is possible that this will occur in other parts of Somerset.

Essentially retired persons appear to be targeted with a phone call.  The caller purports to be from the police and indicates there has been a problem with the use of their bank card.  The caller asks the victim to call them back and gives a number.  The end result of this is that a number of people have so far been conned out of several thousand pounds - each.

Police are investigating this matter however your assistance is also requested:
(a) to encourage anyone subject of such a matter in the last few days to contact the police immediately - using the 101 number.
(b) to encourage residents receiving an unsolicited call from someone alleging to be from the police to take care.  If they ask you to call them back on a number please do not do so.  The number for the Avon and Somerset Constabulary switchboard is 101 and this is the number that should be used if anyone is subject of this type of telephone call.

LOCAL OIL THEFT !4-3-14

Hi all

I am sorry to have to tell you that there has been another oil theft in the village of about 1000 litres.  This time in Underhill and it has been reported to the police.

While it is difficult to take effective precautions, do report suspicious activity to the police as they may be able to use a pattern of events to catch the miscreants.  The best number is 101 unless you see an actual crime in progress when it is 999.

Residents of Tower Ward are requested to look out for suspicious vehicles and report them using 101 or 999 if an incident is in progress. There have been recent thefts of quad bikes in the Brewham Area and theft of food from a freezer in Hadspen. It is highly likely that the areas are being scoped before the thefts take place. A blue Mondeo was recently in the area and following reports, the occupants were stopped and spoken to. Please review your security and consider upgrading to locks, padlocks and chains that will resist bolt croppers.
If you would like some crime reduction advice, please contact Wincanton Police Station using 101.

If you have any information about suspicious incidents or activity please telephone the police on 101.   Please remember to ask the call handler to mark, or tag, your call `NHW' (Neighbourhood Watch).

I will keep you informed but I am aiming for new dates during the middle to end Feb.

Dear Councillors,

With regards to the letter send to me by your Parish Clerk dated 20 Nov requesting maintenance by landowners for hedges and trees over-handing the highway.

My property abuts with Underhill road and it is my intention to start work between 7th to 9th Jan. This will cause short periods of disruption as the tree surgeon fells branches onto the road for which I apologise in advance to road users.

The dates for the work are of course dependant on the weather.

Bruce: Would you be very kind as to e-mail this to your Neighbourhood Watch members

Kind regards.
