It is almost that time of year for the annual Great Crested Newt Survey to take place again at the Moldrams Ground nature reserve. The method used consists of placing special bottle traps around the pond perimeter during the evening, returning the following morning to identify, record and release any newts that have entered overnight. This environmentally sensitive work can only be undertaken by someone holding a special licence. However, anyone who wishes to come along and observe the survey in progress and to learn how to identify the three species of newts found on the reserve will be very welcome. It should certainly provide a wonderful and enjoyable opportunity for schoolchildren to learn about the special habitat necessary to protect the highly endangered Great Crested Newt. The dates chosen for the survey are:
18th April - 8pm
19th April - 9am
2nd May - 8pm
3rd May - 9am
9th May - 8pm
10th May - 9am
We plan to meet with Rachael, the countryside ranger at the top entrance to the reserve and hope to see you at one or other of the surveys!
This event could provide a very interesting educational opportunity for school children.
