Neospora

Neospora abortion is now the most commonly diagnosed cause of abortion in cattle and is a serious concern for UK farmers. It can be caused by cattle ingesting the protozoan parasite Neospora Caninum which may be carried by dogs and excreted in their faeces. With your help the risk of cattle being infected can be reduced by picking up and disposing of your dogs faeces. Responsibly.

Fixing stiles

Last week I volunteered to help Hester and Richard repair and replace a pair of stiles as part of their maintenance programme of the footpaths around Pen. I can recommend it to others as fun, sociable, fresh air and great views. You'll learn a new skill, have a good workout avoiding gym fees, and leave with a sense of achievement as you stand back and admire your handiwork.…

On a run today along Pen Ridge I saw notices about a wildflower meadow being established. You can read more here and you will encounter them on walks 13 and 14

Road closed at Wilton

I know a number of you use the back roads via Hindon to get to Salisbury. Currently the road is closed at Wilton during the day time and road works have overrun. The detour is huge - almost to Shaftesbury or back to the A303. You'll find latest updates here http://www.salisburyreds.co.uk/wilton/ Meanwhile I 'll be using the A36.

Planning Policy

The Parish Council has posted a copy of our new Planning Policy Document for Pen Selwood on the website (go to the Parish Council tab and then Planning.) The document was first issued in October 2011 and sent to all the relevant agencies within the District and County Council.

That original document has now been amended to take into account the findings of the Village Community Plan and the South Somerset draft core strategy for the area. It is, we believe, consistent with the wishes… Continue

New Year's Day Walk

Clear sky just now but the weather looks dreadful for tomorrow. The mince pies are being baked as I type so you are welcome for coffee and mince pies and the walking is optional! I'm happy to guide the (fool)hardy ones around on a brief one hour walk to wash away the cobwebs!

National Adoption Week - Time For a Story

Best-selling authors and famous local people are backing Somerset County Council’s campaign to recruit more adopters during National Adoption Week (4-10 November 2013).

Terry Pratchett and Sir Ranulph Fiennes are among those who have backed the ‘Time for a Story’ campaign by sharing their favourite memory of reading a children’s story with a loved one.

Sharing a great children’s book can create some of the most magical moments of both childhood and parenting. The ‘Time for… Continue

Footpaths over the County border

We've added a great resource, thanks to Bernard. http://explorer.geowessex.com takes you to maps of the area beyond Pen Selwood so you can find your way in Dorset and Wiltshire. It doesn't include all of the paths in Pen, but you can display it as a Street map. Cycle map or Ordnance survey map.

You'll find a link under Countryside > Footpaths down the bottom of the page when you need it next.

Pen Selwood Horse & Dog Show

The second Sunday in August is a special date for local riders and dog owners. The Pen Selwood Horse & Dog Show was a great success this year. We were blessed with a lovely day, not too warm or too cold.

The entries were up on last year, particularly for the dogs.

Two of our charities were present with stands, Horseworld from Bristol and Greyhound Rescue West…
